Aisha loved to sing. She made up songs about everything—birds, bugs, and big blue skies. One sunny morning, she skipped to the meadow beside the sparkling blue river. The wildflowers were red, yellow, and purple. The puffy white clouds floated overhead like cotton candy.
Aisha knelt by the river and dipped her hand in the cool water. A tiny drop of water bounced up and landed on a leaf. The little drop had a bright, cheerful sparkle. "Hello!" said the drop. "My name is Drip! I am about to go on a big adventure!"
"An adventure? Where are you going?" Aisha asked. "Up, up, up!" said Drip. "The warm sun will help me float up into the sky. That is called evaporation! The sun heats the water, and tiny drops like me turn into vapor and rise into the air." Aisha's eyes grew wide. "Can I follow you?"
"Make up a song for me!" said Drip. "Then you will always know where I am." Aisha clapped her hands and began to sing: "Drip, drip, drop! Water does not stop! Up to the clouds and down to the ground, water goes round and round!"
The sun grew warm and bright. Drip began to shimmer and shake. Slowly, he floated up, up, up into the air! He got lighter and lighter as he turned into water vapor. "Goodbye for now!" Drip called. "Look for me in the clouds!" Aisha waved and kept singing her song.
Drip floated higher and higher. When he reached the cool sky, he joined many other tiny drops of water. Together, they made a cloud! This is called condensation—when water vapor cools down and comes together to form clouds. The cloud grew bigger and bigger, and it turned dark gray.
Aisha looked up, but she could not see Drip anymore. The big gray cloud was too thick and dark. "Oh no!" said Aisha. "Where did Drip go? I lost him!" She felt a little worried. The meadow grew dim as the cloud covered the sun.
Then Aisha remembered what Drip had said. She took a deep breath and began to sing: "Drip, drip, drop! Water does not stop! Up to the clouds and down to the ground, water goes round and round!" She sang it loud and clear, and she did not give up.
Pitter-patter! Pitter-patter! Rain began to fall from the big gray cloud. This is called precipitation—when clouds get so full of water that the drops fall back down as rain! A sparkling raindrop landed right on Aisha's nose. "You found me!" said Drip with a giggle.
Drip slid off Aisha's nose and splashed onto the ground. He trickled over the grass and between the wildflowers. Then he rolled downhill and splashed right into the sparkling blue river! "This is called collection!" Drip called out. "The rain flows into rivers, lakes, and oceans. And then the adventure starts all over again!"
The rain stopped, and the sun came back out. A shimmering rainbow arced across the sky in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Aisha gasped. "It is so beautiful!" she said. "That happens when sunlight shines through the raindrops," said Drip from the river. "See? Water makes wonderful things!"
Aisha sat in the warm meadow and sang her song one more time: "Drip, drip, drop! Water does not stop! Up to the clouds and down to the ground, water goes round and round!" She smiled at the river. She knew that Drip would always come back. Water always goes round and round again.
