Jamal loved quiet afternoons. He loved to sit and think, just like when he played chess. Today, he spread a big green blanket on the grass in his hilltop backyard. He sat down, looked up, and smiled. The sky was bright and blue.
The sun was warm and golden. It made the flowers glow in red, yellow, and purple. "What a sunny day," said Jamal. He watched the sunlight dance across the grass. Sunshine means the sky is clear and there are no clouds in the way.
Then something changed. Big, puffy white clouds drifted across the sky. They moved slowly, like fluffy sheep floating in the air. Jamal tilted his head. "Hmm," he said. "Clouds are made of tiny drops of water, way up high. I wonder what will happen next."
Whoooosh! A gust of wind blew through the trees. It rustled the leaves and made the flowers sway back and forth. Jamal's blanket flapped at the corners. "Wind is moving air," Jamal said. "It pushes the clouds across the sky, just like I push my chess pieces across the board!"
Just then, Jamal's little sister Naya came running up the hill. She carried a basket full of sandwiches and apple slices. "Picnic time!" she said with a big grin. She plopped down on the big green blanket next to Jamal.
Naya opened the basket and set out the food. But then the puffy white clouds turned dark and gray. "Uh-oh," said Jamal. "When clouds get dark, that means they are full of water. I think rain is coming." He watched the sky carefully, like a chess player thinking about the next move.
Drip. Drip. Drop! Rain began to fall. Little drops of water came down from the dark clouds. Naya frowned. "Oh no!" she cried. "The rain is ruining our picnic! I do not like rain!" She quickly put the sandwiches back in the basket.
Jamal put his arm around Naya. "Rain is special, too," he said softly. "The flowers and trees need rain to drink, just like we need water. Without rain, nothing would grow." Naya looked at the flowers. The raindrops sat on the petals like tiny jewels.
"But I want the sun back," said Naya with a little pout. Jamal smiled. "Let's be patient and watch," he said. "The weather is always changing. If we wait and pay attention, something wonderful might happen. That is what I love about watching the sky."
Slowly, the rain stopped. Drip... drip... done! The sun peeked out from behind the clouds. And then—"Look!" shouted Naya. A beautiful rainbow stretched across the sky! It had red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple stripes, curving from one side of the sky to the other.
"A rainbow happens when sunshine shines through the rain still in the air," said Jamal. "The light bends and makes all those colors!" Naya clapped her hands. "So we needed the rain AND the sun to make the rainbow?" "Yes!" said Jamal. "Every kind of weather is part of the surprise."
Jamal and Naya sat back down on their big green blanket. They ate their sandwiches under the rainbow. "You were right, Jamal," said Naya. "Waiting was worth it!" Jamal grinned. "The sky is like a big chess game. If you watch carefully and stay patient, you never know what amazing thing will happen next!"
