Hana loved to dance in her bright, cozy kitchen. Every morning, she twirled across the checkered floor and hummed a happy tune. The sunny windows let in warm light, and everything felt just right.
Hana spun and spun. She hummed louder and louder. Then — BUMP! CLATTER! CRASH! Something was moving inside the cupboards! Hana stopped and looked. The cupboard doors were shaking!
POP! Out tumbled three silly friends — Cat, Bat, and Hat! Cat was a round orange tabby. Bat had tiny purple wings. And Hat was a tall, stripy top hat with little legs. "Hello!" said Cat. "Your dancing woke us up!"
"Who are you?" asked Hana. "We are the -at family!" said Bat. "Listen — Cat, Bat, Hat! Our names all sound the same at the end!" Hana clapped her hands. "They do! They all end in -at!" "Yes!" cheered Hat. "That means we rhyme!"
Hana and the -at family clapped and sang together. "Cat! Bat! Hat! We love to rhyme like that!" They stomped on the checkered floor. They wiggled and giggled. Rhyming was so much fun!
But then — BANG! RATTLE! WHOOSH! More cupboard doors flew open! Out rolled Dog, Frog, and Log! Dog was a floppy brown pup. Frog was bright green and bouncy. And Log was a short, round log with a big grin. "Did someone say rhyme?" barked Dog. "We rhyme too! Dog, Frog, Log! We are the -og family!"
And then — POP! POP! POP! Out hopped Hen, Pen, and Ben! Hen was a fluffy red hen. Pen was a tall blue pen with sneakers. And Ben was a smiling gingerbread boy. "Don't forget us!" clucked Hen. "Hen, Pen, Ben — we are the -en family! We rhyme too!"
Now the kitchen was LOUD! "Cat! Bat! Hat!" sang the -at family. "Dog! Frog! Log!" barked the -og family. "Hen! Pen! Ben!" clucked the -en family. Everyone was rhyming at the same time! It was a noisy, jumbled mess. No one could hear!
"Wait! Wait!" called Hana. She held up her hands. "I have an idea! You can take turns! Each family can dance and sing their rhymes, and the others will cheer!" The word families looked at each other. "Okay!" they all said.
The -at family went first. Cat, Bat, and Hat danced across the floor. "Cat! Bat! Hat! We rhyme like that!" they sang. Everyone clapped and cheered! Then the -og family took a turn. Dog, Frog, and Log hopped and stomped. "Dog! Frog! Log! We dance on every cog!" Everyone cheered again!
Then it was the -en family's turn! Hen, Pen, and Ben twirled and tapped. "Hen! Pen! Ben! Let's rhyme again and again!" they sang. Hana clapped the loudest. "You all sound wonderful when you take turns!" she said. "Now let's ALL dance together!"
And so they did! All three word families and Hana danced together across the checkered floor. "Cat! Bat! Hat! Dog! Frog! Log! Hen! Pen! Ben!" they sang in one big, joyful rhyming parade. Hana laughed and twirled. Rhyming words were everywhere — and the kitchen had never been so much fun!
