Ezra sat under his favorite oak tree in the sunny park. The big tree gave him cool shade. Bright wildflowers dotted the green hills all around. Ezra opened his book and smiled. "This is my best reading spot," he said.
The story in Ezra's book was about a magical treehouse. It had a tiny door, round windows, and a flag on top. "Wow," Ezra whispered. "I wish I could build a treehouse just like this one!" The gentle breeze rustled the leaves above him, as if the tree was saying yes.
Just then, Lily the calico cat padded up to Ezra. She rubbed her head on his knee and purred. "Lily, look!" said Ezra. He showed her the picture of the treehouse. Lily's eyes grew big. She batted the page with her soft paw. She wanted to help build it too!
Ezra and Lily walked to the wide open meadow. A friendly girl was there, picking up sticks. "Hi!" she called. "What are you two doing?" "We want to build a treehouse!" said Ezra. "I can help!" she said. "I am good at finding strong sticks." She held up a big, sturdy stick and grinned.
Soon, a friendly boy ran over to see what was happening. "A treehouse? That sounds fun!" he said. "I know how to tie sticks together really tight!" He pulled out a ball of rope and showed them a strong knot. "See? It will not come apart!" Now the team had three friends and one clever cat.
The friends got to work! Stack, stack, stack! The friendly girl found the strongest sticks. Tap, tap, tap! She set them in a row. The friendly boy wrapped the rope around and around. Pull, pull, pull! He tied each knot tight. Ezra held the sticks steady while Lily carried small twigs in her mouth.
The walls began to go up. But then—wobble, wobble, CRASH! The sticks fell down. "Oh no!" said Ezra. They tried again. Stack, stack, stack. Wobble, wobble, CRASH! Down they went once more. "The walls keep falling!" said the friendly girl. "What can we do?"
Ezra looked at his book again. "I have an idea!" he said. "In the story, the walls lean on each other. If we all hold one wall and push them together, they will stay up!" "Let's try it!" said the friendly boy. "Teamwork!" cheered the friendly girl. Lily meowed loudly, ready to help.
This time, everyone worked together. Ezra held one wall. The friendly girl held another. The friendly boy held a third. Push, push, push! They leaned the walls against each other. The walls stayed up! "It works!" Ezra cheered. Lily rubbed against the walls to test them. They did not fall!
Now it was time to make the treehouse beautiful. The friendly girl found bright paints—red, blue, and yellow. Lily dipped her paw in the yellow paint and pressed it on the wall. It left a perfect paw print! "Lily is painting too!" laughed Ezra. Swish, swish, swish! They painted flowers, stars, and suns all over.
At last, the treehouse was done! It had strong walls, tight knots, and bright, colorful paint. It even had a tiny door and a little flag on top, just like in Ezra's book. "We did it!" said the friendly boy. "We did it together!" said the friendly girl. Lily climbed up to the top and sat by the flag, looking very proud.
The friends climbed inside their cozy treehouse. Ezra opened his storybook. "Now I will read you the story that started it all," he said. Lily curled up in his lap and purred. The friendly girl and the friendly boy leaned in close to listen. And as Ezra read, they all smiled, because the best things are built together.
