Mei loved to draw. She had a big sketchbook and lots of crayons. Every day, she drew something new. Today, she drew a little door right in the middle of the page.
The little door began to glow! It swung open — whoooosh! Mei felt a warm, swirly breeze. She peeked inside. "Oh!" said Mei. And in she went!
Mei landed in a world made of crayons and watercolors! The hills were swirly. The sky was soft. And everything came in twos. She saw a BIG elephant standing next to a small mouse. "Hello!" said the big elephant in a deep voice. "Hi!" squeaked the small mouse in a tiny voice.
Mei drew them in her sketchbook. Big and small! She walked down a winding path. Then she saw a FAST rabbit zoom by — zip, zip, zip! And a slow turtle crept behind — step… step… step. "Wait for me," said the slow turtle with a smile.
Fast and slow! Mei drew them too. Next, she heard a LOUD boom — CRASH, BANG, BOOM! It was a loud drum, bouncing on a cloud. Then soft, quiet snowflakes drifted down without a sound. Shhhhh. Can you be quiet like a snowflake?
Loud and quiet! Mei drew them in her book. She walked on. A TALL sunflower stretched way, way up to the sky. A short daisy sat snug in the grass below. "You are so tall!" said the short daisy. "You are so cute!" said the tall sunflower.
Tall and short! Then Mei saw something funny. A big, fuzzy bear gave a tiny hug to a small, small ladybug. The bear was so gentle. The ladybug giggled. "You are warm and squishy!" said the ladybug. Mei laughed and drew them too.
But then Mei heard something sad. Voices! Lots and lots of voices. She followed the winding path to the very heart of the land. All the opposites were there — and they were arguing! "I am big! You are too small!" said the elephant. "I am fast! You are too slow!" said the rabbit.
"We do not belong together!" they all said. The loud drum frowned. The quiet snowflakes looked sad. The tall sunflower turned away from the short daisy. Oh no! Mei felt her heart go thump. "Wait," she said softly. "I have an idea."
Mei opened her sketchbook to a big, big page. She drew and drew and drew! She drew the big elephant holding the small mouse. She drew the fast rabbit giving the slow turtle a ride. She drew the loud drum playing a lullaby for the quiet snowflakes. She drew every opposite — side by side.
The opposites looked at Mei's picture. The big elephant smiled. The small mouse clapped. "We DO belong together!" they cheered. "Different is wonderful!" The whole land lit up — bright and beautiful! Colors swirled. The hills grew tall and small. The clouds bounced loud and quiet. Everything sparkled.
Mei felt a warm, swirly breeze again — whoooosh! She was back in her room. Her sketchbook was full of drawings. Big and small. Fast and slow. Loud and quiet. Tall and short. All different. All friends. Mei hugged her sketchbook and smiled. Different things can be the best of friends.
