Jamal sat on his favorite bench in the park. The bench was warm from the sun. The grass was soft and green. "What a nice day," said Jamal. He looked around. What would he find today?
Jamal looked up at the big tree. He saw something round and red. One red apple! It was smooth and shiny. It smelled so sweet! "One," said Jamal. "One red apple." Can you count one apple?
Jamal looked down at the grass. He saw something soft and orange. Two orange cats! They were curled up in the warm sun. Their fur was fuzzy and warm. "Two," said Jamal. "Two orange cats." Can you count two cats?
Whoooosh! Something flew up high. Jamal looked at the sky. A kite! It had three yellow stars on it. The stars were bright and sparkly. "Three," said Jamal. "Three yellow stars!" Can you count three stars?
Ribbit! Ribbit! Jamal heard a funny sound. He walked to the pond. He saw four green frogs sitting on lily pads. They were slimy and cool. Suddenly, one green frog winked at him! "Four," laughed Jamal. "Four green frogs!"
Jamal looked up again. Five blue birds sat on a fence! They sang a pretty song. Tweet, tweet, tweet! Their feathers were soft and smooth. "Five," said Jamal. "Five blue birds." Can you count five birds?
Jamal walked down the winding path. He saw something new! Six purple flowers grew by a rock. They smelled like honey. Bzzz! A bee liked them too! "Six," said Jamal. "Six purple flowers!"
Jamal kept counting. He found seven pink pebbles by the pond. They were small and round and smooth. He picked one up. It felt cool in his hand. "Seven," said Jamal. "Seven pink pebbles!"
What was that on the ground? Jamal saw eight brown acorns under the big tree. They were tiny and bumpy. A squirrel ran by and grabbed one! "Eight," giggled Jamal. "Eight brown acorns!"
Jamal walked back to his bench. He looked at the sky. Nine white clouds floated way up high! Big ones and little ones. One cloud looked like a bunny. Suddenly, the bunny cloud wiggled its nose! "Nine," whispered Jamal. "Nine white clouds."
Drip, drip! Soft rain began to fall. Jamal counted the drops on his hand. One, two, three... ten! Ten silver raindrops! They tickled his skin. They felt cool and wet. "Ten," smiled Jamal. "Ten silver raindrops!"
Then the rain stopped. The sun came back out. Jamal looked up and gasped. A big, beautiful rainbow stretched across the sky! Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and more — every color he had counted! Jamal smiled his biggest smile. The whole world was full of colors to count. And wonderful things to see.
