Mateo walks into the apple orchard. The sun is warm. The air smells like cinnamon. Big green trees stand in long, long rows. "What a happy place!" says Mateo.
Mateo looks up at a big green tree. Shiny red apples hang from the branches. "How many apples do I see?" says Mateo. One... two... three! Three red apples on the tree!
Mateo finds a wooden basket in the soft grass. Some apples have fallen in! "How many apples in the basket?" says Mateo. One... two... three... four! Four red apples in the basket!
Mateo picks up one apple. It is smooth and cool. He looks at it closely. A friendly farmer slices it open. "How many seeds inside?" says Mateo. One... two... three... four... five! Five little seeds hiding inside the apple!
"Seeds are so tiny!" says Mateo. "But they can grow into big, big trees!" He counts the seeds again. One, two, three, four, five. Five tiny seeds. Five big trees they could become!
Mateo walks to the little red barn. Something smells sweet and warm. Golden pies sit cooling on the open window. "How many pies do I see?" says Mateo. One... two... three... four... five... six! Six golden pies on the windowsill!
Mateo looks around the orchard. He sees more baskets in the grass. "How many baskets can I find?" says Mateo. He walks and counts. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven! Seven wooden baskets scattered in the soft grass!
Now Mateo looks up at the sky. Puffy white clouds float by. They smell like cinnamon! "How many clouds?" says Mateo. He counts them all. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight! Eight puffy clouds!
Mateo jumps up. He wants to fill a basket! He picks apples one by one. They feel smooth and cool in his hands. "How many apples did I pick?" One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine! Nine apples in the basket now!
Mateo sits on the soft grass. He looks at all the things he counted today. Three on a tree. Four in a basket. Five little seeds. Six golden pies. Numbers are everywhere! But wait...
Mateo feels something round in his pocket. He reaches in and pulls it out. It is one small, shiny red apple! "Oh!" says Mateo. "One more apple was hiding! How many is that now?" Nine apples... plus one... makes TEN!
Mateo hugs his basket of ten apples. He laughs. "Numbers are everywhere!" says Mateo. "On trees, in baskets, inside apples, and even in my pocket!" Counting makes the whole world a fun, never-ending game. How many things can YOU count today?
