Jamal sat by the sunny window. The warm light fell on his lap. It was a quiet afternoon — his favorite kind.
Jamal heard a sound from the kitchen. Clink, clink, clink! Someone was getting lunch ready. Jamal peeked around the corner.
The table needed plates. It needed cups. It needed spoons. "I can help!" said Jamal. He carried the colorful plates, one by one. Clink, clink, clink!
Jamal set each plate down gently. He put a spoon by every plate. Clink! The table looked so nice. Jamal felt big and proud.
Then Jamal heard a little sound. Mrrrow! It was Butterscotch, his fluffy orange cat. Butterscotch rubbed against Jamal's legs. Purrrr, purrrr.
Butterscotch's bowl was empty! "I can help!" said Jamal. He scooped the food. Crunch, crunch, crunch went Butterscotch. Purrrr, purrrr.
Jamal walked back to the living room. Oh no! Blocks were here. Blocks were there. Blocks were everywhere! What a mess!
"I can help!" said Jamal. He picked up a red block. Then a blue block. Then a yellow block. One by one, into the toy box they went. Clunk, clunk, clunk!
Every last block went in. The room was clean and tidy. Jamal looked around and smiled. Helping felt warm — like sunshine inside his chest.
Knock, knock, knock! Jamal's friends came to play. They saw the tidy room. They saw the pretty table. "Wow, Jamal! You helped a lot!" they said.
But then — surprise! "WE can help too!" said his friends. One friend folded a blanket. One friend stacked some books. Even Butterscotch helped — she batted a lost sock under the couch! Purrrr!
Jamal laughed. Helping was good. But helping together? That was the best! "We can ALL help!" everyone cheered. And the home felt warm, happy, and full of love.
