Amara sat on her big fuzzy rug. She had her stuffed friends all around her. There was Bear, Bunny, and little Fox. "I want to tell a story!" said Amara.
"Once upon a time…" Amara began. She thought and thought. "A cat!" she said. That was her whole story. Just two little words. Bear tipped to one side. Bunny flopped over. Fox just stared.
"Tell me more!" said Bear in a rumbly voice. Well, Amara made the rumbly voice. "Who is the cat?" Bear asked. Amara smiled. "A little orange cat!" Now she could see him in her mind — soft and fuzzy, with a swishy tail.
"Tell me more!" said Bunny in a squeaky voice. "What did the cat do?" Amara wiggled with excitement. "A little orange cat… jumped!" She jumped up too. Boing, boing, boing — right on the fuzzy rug!
"Tell me more!" said Fox in a tiny, whispery voice. "Where did the cat jump?" Amara looked around her room. She saw her wobbly book towers. "A little orange cat jumped… over a big stack of books!"
"Tell me more! Tell me more!" said all three friends together. Well, Amara said it three times in three silly voices. "When did the cat jump?" Amara thought. She looked at the golden light in her star window. "At bedtime!"
Amara took a big breath. She put all the pieces together. "At bedtime, a little orange cat jumped over a big stack of books!" The words felt warm and squishy — like a hug! Her tiny story had grown so big!
But wait — Amara wanted to try again! "I have another story," she said. "Rain!" Bear tipped to one side again. "Tell me more!" said Bear. "Who? What? Where? When?" Amara giggled. She knew what to do now!
Amara closed her eyes. She could smell the rain — fresh and cool. She could hear it — drip, drop, drip, drop! "In the morning, a happy little cloud rained sweet, sparkly drops all over the garden!" Suddenly, the cloud giggled! Well, in her story it did.
"More! More! More!" cheered her friends. Amara was ready for her biggest story yet. She took a deep, deep breath. She hugged Bear tight for courage. She could feel his soft, fuzzy fur. She could do this!
"One snowy night, a brave little girl and her three best friends climbed a mountain of pillows to find a star!" Bear didn't tip over. Bunny didn't flop. Fox didn't just stare. They all clapped! Well, Amara clapped for them. Clap, clap, clap!
Amara looked at her friends and smiled. "Do you know the magic trick?" she whispered. "Just say… tell me more!" And that is how every little story becomes a big, sparkly, wonderful story. Now you try! Tell me more!
