Mei sat on a soft, grassy hill in the park. The sun was warm. The sky was blue. Mei opened her sketchbook and drew a big, happy tree.
Then Mei saw something funny on the path. It was a hat! A red and yellow stripy hat, sitting all by itself on the smooth, round stones. And it was... wiggling!
Mei picked up the hat. "Hello!" said the hat. Mei's eyes went wide. "You can TALK?" she said. "I can talk, and I can chat! I am a very silly hat!" said the hat.
Mei put the hat on her head. It felt soft and warm. "Let's go for a walk!" said the hat. "I bet we will meet someone who rhymes with HAT!" So Mei walked down the winding stone path.
"Look!" said the hat. By the pond sat a soft, fluffy cat. "Hello!" said Mei. "Do you want to walk with us?" The cat purred. "I am a cat, and I like your hat! Cat, hat — we rhyme like that!"
Mei, the hat, and the cat walked along the path. Then — FLAP, FLAP, FLAP! Down from a tree came a little brown bat. "I am a bat! I heard you chat! Can I rhyme too? Bat, cat, hat!"
"Yes!" said Mei. They all walked together. Then from behind a round, gray rock — out popped a tiny rat! "I am a rat! I am small, not fat! Rat, bat, cat, hat! I want to rhyme like that!"
Now they were a rhyme parade! Mei marched, and they all sang together: "Hat, cat, bat, rat — we all rhyme like THAT!" They sang it loud. They sang it soft. They sang it silly. Can you say it too?
But then — WHOOOOSH! A big gust of wind blew through the park. It blew the leaves. It blew the grass. And it blew the hat right off Mei's head! "Oh no!" cried Mei. "My hat!"
"I will fly and catch the hat!" said the bat. "I will run and chase the hat!" said the cat. "I will dash and grab the hat!" said the rat. "And I will help too!" said Mei. So they all ran, flew, and scurried together!
The bat swooped. The cat jumped. The rat climbed up a bush. And Mei stretched out her hands and — CATCH! She got the hat! The hat giggled. "That was fun, imagine that! Thank you, Mei, and cat and bat and rat!"
Mei sat back down on her soft, grassy hill. She opened her sketchbook. And she drew a picture of all her new friends — the hat, the cat, the bat, and the rat. "Hat, cat, bat, rat," Mei whispered with a smile. "What a rhyming day!"
