Kai loved the ocean. He loved the waves. He loved his surfboard. One sunny day, Kai rode a big, big wave. SPLASH! The wave carried him far, far away.
Kai landed on a tiny island. It was shaped like the letter I! The sand was warm. The air smelled salty and sweet. Palm trees swayed in the breeze. What a funny little island!
Something wiggled in the sand. Something waddled on the path. It was an iguana! A bright green iguana with orange spots. "Hi!" said Kai. "I am Iggy," said the iguana. "I-i-i! Iggy starts with I!"
"I-i-i," said Kai. "Iggy! Iguana! I hear the sound!" Iggy wiggled and giggled. "Yes! I-i-i! That is the short I sound. Say it with me!" "I-i-i!" said Kai. Can you say it too? I-i-i!
Iggy led Kai down the path. They found a round igloo made of shimmering ice! It sparkled in the sun. Kai stepped inside. Brrr! It was cold, cold, cold! "I-i-i!" Kai shivered. "Igloo starts with I!"
Kai came back out into the warm sun. Ahh! Then something tiny tickled his arm. It was an inch-worm! A teeny, tiny inch-worm, inching along. "I-i-i!" giggled Kai. "That tickles! Inch-worm starts with I!"
Buzz, buzz, buzz! Itty-bitty insects flew out of a leafy green bush. They buzzed around Kai's head. "I-i-i!" they buzzed. "Insects starts with I!" "I-i-i!" Kai buzzed back. So many I words on this island!
Then—WHOOOOSH! A strong wind blew across the island. It shook the palm trees. It kicked up sand. Oh no! The wind blew all the letters off the island's welcome sign! The big letter I flew away! The sign was empty!
"Oh no!" said Kai. "The I is gone!" Iggy looked sad. The inch-worm looked sad. The itty-bitty insects stopped buzzing. "We need our I back!" said Iggy. "How do we get it?" asked Kai.
"I know!" said Iggy. "We call out I words!" Kai smiled. "Iguana!" called Kai. "I-i-i!" One letter floated back. "Igloo!" called Iggy. "I-i-i!" Another letter came. "Insects! Inch-worm! Interesting!" they all called. "I-i-i! I-i-i! I-i-i!"
POP! POP! POP! Every letter flew back onto the sign. The welcome sign was fixed! It sparkled and glowed. Kai threw his hands up high. "I is for interesting!" he shouted. And all his island friends cheered!
Kai hugged Iggy goodbye. He waved to the inch-worm and the itty-bitty insects. He hopped on his surfboard. "I-i-i!" he called as he rode a wave home. What a day! Can you say the short I sound? I-i-i! Good job!
