Amara loves to ask big questions. Today she asks, "What starts with the letter S?" She looks down the sunny, sandy trail. "Let's go on a safari!" she says.
The sand is warm under her feet. Amara wiggles her toes. It feels squishy and soft. "S-s-sand!" she says. "Sand starts with S!"
Something slithers by. Swish, swish, swish! A friendly striped snake wiggles across the trail. "S-s-snake!" says Amara. "Snake starts with S!"
Amara looks up. The sky is soft and lavender. Glittery stars dangle low, low, low. She reaches up and touches one! "S-s-stars!" she says. "Stars start with S!"
But wait. What is that? Something sneaky hides behind a big smiling sunflower. Amara sees it peek out. Then — zip! — it hides again!
"Who is hiding?" asks Amara. She listens. She hears a swishy sound. Swish, swish, swish! It sounds silly. It sounds like… S!
Amara sniffs the air. She smells something sweet, like sunshine and sunflowers. "I will follow my nose!" she says. She walks down the swishy trail.
She finds more S things! A smooth, shiny stone. A silly spotted spider. A small silver shell. "S-s-s!" says Amara. "S is everywhere!"
Then she hears it again. A tiny giggle! "Hee hee hee!" It comes from behind the biggest, tallest smiling sunflower. Amara tiptoes closer. S-s-so close!
"Found you!" says Amara. And there it is — a sneaky little letter S! It is sparkly and wiggly. It giggles and dances. "You silly S!" Amara laughs.
Amara scoops up the silly S. She hugs it tight. "I found so many S things today!" she says. "Snakes! Stars! Sand! Sunflowers! But what is the silliest S-word of all?"
Amara smiles her biggest, brightest smile. The sneaky S smiles too! "S-s-smile!" says Amara. "Smile starts with S! And smiling is the best thing of all!" Can you smile too? S-s-s!
