Luna Lighthug lived in a friendly purple castle with her cat, Luna. Their bedroom had a big round window where soft silver moonlight poured in every night. Luna Lighthug loved that moonlight more than anything. Well, almost anything.
She also loved her cat, Luna. Luna the cat wore a little silver bell on her collar that jingled and jangled everywhere she went. Jingle, jingle, jingle! The sound made Luna Lighthug smile every single time.
Luna Lighthug loved to do so many things! She read books about the moon and the stars. She painted sparkly pictures with glittery art supplies. She swooshed around in her sparkling capes and played with Luna's jingling cat toys. Every night was an adventure!
But there was one thing Luna Lighthug did not love to do. She did not love to clean up. After reading, she left her books in tall, wobbly stacks. After painting, she left her glittery art supplies all over the floor. After playing, she left jingling cat toys everywhere. Night after night, the mess grew bigger and bigger.
One night, Luna the cat jumped off the bed to play. She pounced on a pile of sparkling capes. She batted at a stack of books. Then she stopped. She tilted her head. Something was wrong. Luna Lighthug looked at her cat. "What is it, Luna?" she asked. Luna the cat shook her head. There was no jingle. There was no jangle. Her little silver bell was gone!
"Oh no!" said Luna Lighthug. "We have to find your bell!" She looked under a sparkling cape. No bell. She looked behind a stack of books. No bell. She looked inside a box of glittery art supplies. No bell! The room was so messy that she could not find anything at all. Luna the cat sat down and meowed sadly.
Luna Lighthug sat down next to her cat. "This mess is too big," she said. "I do not know where to start." She looked at the moonlight coming through the big round window. It made one small spot on the floor glow silver and bright. "Maybe I can start right there," she said. "Just one small spot."
Luna Lighthug picked up one thing. Then another. Then another. She put the glittery art supplies in their box. She stacked the books in a neat pile. She hung the sparkling capes on their hooks. She started to hum a little song as she worked. Luna the cat batted the jingling cat toys into their basket. They were a team!
"One pile at a time," Luna Lighthug said. "One spot at a time. One song at a time!" It was not so hard after all. The big mess was really just a lot of little messes. And little messes were easy to fix. She smiled. Cleaning up felt like a game when she did it bit by bit.
Then Luna the cat pawed at something under the last pile of sparkling capes. Jingle! Luna Lighthug gasped. "You found it!" she cried. There it was—the little silver bell, shining in the moonlight. Luna Lighthug clipped it back onto Luna's collar. Jingle, jingle, jingle! Luna the cat purred and purred.
Luna Lighthug looked around the room. The floor was clear. The moonlight spread across it like a silver sea. "Look, Luna!" she said. "Our room feels as bright and wonderful as the moonlight!" She twirled in the open space, and her sparkling cape caught the light. The whole room glowed.
That night, Luna Lighthug made a plan. "Every night before the moon rises," she told her cat, "we will put things away. Just a little bit at a time." Luna the cat jingled her little silver bell as if to say yes. Luna Lighthug knew some nights would still be messy. Some nights she would be too tired or too busy having fun. But she would try. And trying—that was the thing that mattered most.
