Luna Lighthug lived in a cozy group home at the edge of a moonlit village. The village sat between rolling purple hills, and every cottage glowed with warm, colorful light. Luna Lighthug had sparkly skin that shimmered in the moonlight. She loved to stand by the window and let the moon shine on her face.
Luna Lighthug was not alone. She had a best friend — a soft, affectionate cat named Luna. Luna the cat wore a collar that jingled with tiny silver bells. Everywhere Luna Lighthug went, she could hear the gentle jingle-jingle of her cat close behind.
Every night, Luna Lighthug and her cat Luna would walk through the village. They would skip past cottages painted red and blue and green. They would wave to friendly monster families sitting on their porches. The moon above was big and round, like a glowing friend watching over them all.
One evening, a kind family came to the group home. They had warm smiles and gentle voices. "We would love for you to be part of our family," they said. Luna Lighthug felt her heart beat fast. A family? For her? She smiled a big, sparkly smile.
But later that night, Luna Lighthug sat on her bed and held Luna the cat close. The little bells on Luna's collar jingled softly. "I feel happy," Luna Lighthug whispered. "But I also feel sad. Is that okay?" Luna the cat purred and purred, as if to say, yes, it is okay.
Luna Lighthug's thoughts swirled like leaves in the wind. What about the friends at the group home? What about her cozy room? Would loving a new family mean she had to forget where she came from? Her eyes felt hot, and a tear rolled down her sparkly cheek.
The next evening, Luna Lighthug walked to the community hall at the center of the village. It had a big round window shaped like the moon. Inside, a wise old neighbor sat in a rocking chair. She was a friendly dragon with kind, golden eyes. "Something is on your mind," the wise neighbor said gently.
"I want to go with my new family," Luna Lighthug said. "But I am scared I will forget the people I love here." The wise neighbor smiled. "Your heart is not like a cup that gets full," she said. "Your heart is like the sky. It can grow bigger and bigger to hold many kinds of love."
"And when your feelings get big and tangled," the wise neighbor added, "the best thing you can do is talk about them. Tell someone you trust how you feel. Big feelings are less scary when you share them out loud." Luna Lighthug nodded slowly. That made sense to her.
Luna Lighthug walked home under the wide, bright moon. Luna the cat trotted beside her, bells jingling with every step. "I can feel happy AND sad," Luna Lighthug said to her cat. "Both feelings are real. And I can talk about them whenever they get too big." Luna the cat purred, and it sounded like a tiny song.
The night came when it was time to go. Luna Lighthug packed a small bag. She tucked in her favorite purple quilt and a drawing she had made of the group home. She picked up Luna the cat, who jingled and purred. "I am ready," she said. "I am bringing my old memories with me."
Luna Lighthug stepped through the door of her new home. The kind family welcomed her in. Luna the cat's bells jingled as she explored a sunny corner. Luna Lighthug looked out a new window at the same wide, bright moon. It was still there, shining on her, just like always. Tomorrow would be new. And that was okay.
