One sunny morning, Mary skipped down a winding dirt path. The air smelled like warm grass and flowers. "What a beautiful day!" said Mary. Her little Lamb walked right behind her. Clip, clop, clip, clop went Lamb's tiny hooves on the dirt.
Mary was going to school! She carried a little red lunchbox. Lamb followed close behind. Lamb's soft, white wool bounced with every step. Everywhere that Mary went, Lamb was sure to go!
Mary walked through the gate of the white picket fence. She saw the cozy, colorful little schoolhouse. "Come on, Lamb!" said Mary. Lamb said, "Baa!" and followed her right inside. Clip, clop, clip, clop!
Oh my! A lamb in school! The children clapped and cheered. "A lamb! A lamb!" they said. They petted Lamb's soft, white wool. It felt warm and squishy, like a fluffy cloud. Lamb said, "Baa! Baa!" Everyone laughed and played.
Then Teacher walked in. Teacher smiled a big, warm smile. "Well, well!" said Teacher. "What a sweet little lamb!" Teacher gave Lamb a gentle pat. But then Teacher looked at Mary. "Mary," said Teacher kindly, "Lamb cannot stay inside the school."
Mary's smile went away. Her eyes got watery. "But Lamb is my best friend," said Mary in a small voice. "Lamb follows me everywhere." She hugged Lamb tight. Lamb nuzzled Mary's hand. "Baa," said Lamb softly.
Teacher sat down next to Mary. "I know it is hard," said Teacher gently. "Some friends wait for us in special places. Lamb can wait right outside, under the big oak tree. Lamb will be close by. You are not really apart when your hearts are together."
"Can I give Lamb something soft to sit on?" asked Mary. "What a wonderful idea!" said Teacher. Teacher handed Mary a soft, blue blanket. It was cozy and warm. Mary held it to her cheek. It smelled like sunshine.
Mary took Lamb outside. She spread the soft, blue blanket under the tall oak tree. The swing swayed in the breeze. Creak, creak. "Here you go, Lamb," said Mary. Lamb stepped onto the blanket and lay down. The grass smelled sweet all around.
Mary gave Lamb a big, big hug. She whispered in Lamb's soft ear. "I am not going to say goodbye," said Mary. "I am going to say — see you soon!" Lamb looked up at Mary with warm, gentle eyes. "Baa!" said Lamb. That meant, "See you soon, too!"
Mary took a deep breath. Being brave did not mean she was not sad. Being brave meant she knew Lamb was close by, right under that big oak tree. She walked back to the schoolhouse. She looked out the window. There was Lamb, safe and cozy on the soft, blue blanket.
When the school bell rang, Mary ran outside. Lamb jumped up! "Baa! Baa! Baa!" Clip, clop, clip, clop! Mary laughed and hugged Lamb. Tomorrow, Mary would walk down the winding dirt path again. And Lamb would follow. And Mary would say, "See you soon." And that would feel just right.
