Michael loved puzzles more than anything. He loved puzzles with animals, puzzles with trains, and puzzles with big, colorful maps. Today was a special day. His class was going on a field trip to the fire station!
The fire station had big, shiny doors that were open wide. Michael's eyes grew round. Inside sat the biggest, reddest truck he had ever seen! "Wow!" said Michael. "It is so big and so red!"
A kind firefighter in a long yellow coat and a red helmet walked over. "Welcome, kids!" she said with a warm smile. "This is our fire truck. It helps us keep people safe. Let me show you how it works!"
"First, listen to this," said the kind firefighter. She pressed a button, and — WOO-WOO-WOO! A loud siren rang out. "The siren tells cars to move out of the way," she explained. "It is very loud so everyone can hear it, even far away!" Michael covered his ears and laughed.
Next, the kind firefighter showed them the long, white hose curled up on the side of the truck. "This hose shoots water to put out fires," she said. "The water comes out very fast and very strong!" Michael thought it looked like a giant puzzle piece, all coiled up and ready to go.
Then the kind firefighter pointed up. "See that tall ladder on top? It stretches way up high so we can reach people who need help." Michael tilted his head back. The tall silver ladder on top of the truck seemed to touch the sky! "Can I climb up?" he asked. The kind firefighter smiled. "Maybe when you are bigger!"
Michael climbed into the big seat inside the truck. He set his bright red puzzle book on the seat beside him. He held the steering wheel and pretended to drive. "WOO-WOO-WOO!" he called out, just like the siren. He felt like a real firefighter!
Suddenly, a real alarm rang out — BRRRING! BRRRING! The firefighters jumped up fast. "We have to go help!" called the kind firefighter. "Everyone, please step back!" The big, shiny red fire truck roared to life. Its lights flashed red and white. Its siren blared — WOO-WOO-WOO! And just like that, the truck zoomed away down the wide street.
Michael reached into his backpack. His bright red puzzle book was not there. Oh no! He had left it on the seat of the fire truck! Michael felt his tummy flip. He wanted to cry. But then he took a deep breath, just like his teacher always said. "Stay calm and think," he whispered to himself. "I should ask a grown-up for help."
Michael walked up to his teacher. "I left my puzzle book on the fire truck," he said in a steady voice. "Can you help me get it back?" His teacher smiled. "I am proud of you for staying calm and asking for help, Michael. Let me talk to the fire station. We will get your book back." Michael felt better right away.
Later that afternoon, the big, shiny red fire truck came rolling back. The kind firefighter in her long yellow coat and red helmet hopped down. She held up the bright red puzzle book with the golden puzzle piece on the cover. "I think this belongs to a puzzle lover!" she said with a grin. Michael ran over. "Thank you!" he said. "Next time, I will remember to keep my things in my backpack so I always know where they are."
That night, Michael lay in bed and hugged his bright red puzzle book close. He thought about the loud siren, the long white hose, the tall silver ladder, and the flashing lights. Fire trucks were amazing! They helped keep everyone safe. Michael smiled in the dark. "I wonder what I will discover next," he whispered. "Maybe an airplane. Maybe a submarine. Maybe something nobody has even invented yet!" And with his head full of wonder, Michael closed his eyes and dreamed of all the adventures still waiting for him.
