The sun was going down over the desert ranch. The sky glowed orange and pink. Sandy hills stretched far and wide, and friendly cacti stood tall like little green friends waving hello. Cactus Cody sat on the porch of his old wooden ranch house. He had his boots on. He had his hat on. He was NOT ready for bed.
"More playing!" said Cody. "More riding! More fun!" But then—SPLASH! Up from the glittery lake popped his best friend. Nessie Sparkles shook her long, shimmery neck. Tiny drops of water flew everywhere like little diamonds. "Cody!" said Nessie. "Look! The moon is up. The stars are coming out. Do you see what the animals are doing?"
Cody looked toward the barn. There was his horse, swishing her soft brown tail back and forth. Swish, swish, swish. She drank warm water from her bucket. Slurp, slurp, slurp. "She is getting ready for sleep," whispered Nessie. The horse let out a long, happy sigh and closed her big gentle eyes.
"Look up there!" said Nessie. Up on the barn roof sat a fluffy owl. The owl stretched her wide, wide wings. Streeetch! Then she fluffed her soft feathers. Fluff, fluff, fluff! She tucked her head down and got cozy. "Even the owl is getting ready," said Nessie. "She makes herself comfortable first. That helps her fall asleep."
Then Cody saw something small on the ground. A tiny lizard with bumpy green skin was looking for just the right spot. He tried one rock. Too bumpy! He tried another rock. Too cold! Then he found his favorite warm, flat rock and curled up tight. "Ahh," said the little lizard. "Just right." Cody giggled. "He is like me finding my cozy spot in bed!"
Nessie swam closer and rested her shimmery chin on the edge of the lake. "See, Cody? Everyone does something special before sleep. It is like a little routine—the same cozy steps, every night. It helps your body know it is time to rest." Cody looked at the sleeping horse. He looked at the cozy owl. He looked at the snuggly lizard. "Okay," said Cody. "Maybe I can try."
First, Cody went inside the warm ranch house. The lantern flickered soft and golden. He picked up his toothbrush. Brush, brush, brush! Up and down. Side to side. His teeth felt clean and smooth. "Sparkly teeth!" called Nessie from the window. Cody laughed. "Sparkly like YOU, Nessie!"
Next, Cody took off his boots. He took off his bandana. He pulled on his soft blue pajamas with little yellow stars all over them. They felt warm and cozy, like a hug. "These are my favorite," said Cody, wiggling his toes. The pajamas smelled like sunshine and clean soap. Cody took a deep breath and smiled.
Then came the best part. Cody picked up his favorite book. It had a picture of a horse on the front. He climbed into his little bed by the window. The soft patchwork quilt was warm over his legs. The lantern made a gentle glow. Cody read one page. Then two. Then three. His eyes started to feel heavy, like little sleepy curtains wanting to close.
Cody set his book down and looked out the window. The stars were twinkling—bright, bright, bright! But wait. One little star was twinkling MORE than the others. It wiggled. It jiggled. And then—it GIGGLED! "Hee hee hee!" laughed the little star. "Hey!" said Cody. "Did that star just laugh?" The little star whispered, "Go to sleep, Cody. Tomorrow has a brand-new adventure waiting just for you!"
Cody smiled a big, sleepy smile. Saying goodnight was not the end of fun. It was a cozy bridge to the next exciting day. He pulled the soft patchwork quilt up to his chin. He closed his eyes. Outside, Nessie Sparkles curled up in the glittery lake. Her shimmery scales glowed soft and warm, like a nightlight just for Cody.
The desert was quiet now. The horse slept in the barn. The owl dozed on the roof. The lizard dreamed on his warm rock. And somewhere, a little giggling star kept watch over them all. Nessie's gentle glow lit Cody's window like a nightlight. Cody's breath was soft and slow. What would tomorrow bring? A new trail to ride? A hidden cave to find? A song to sing under the big, blue sky? Whatever it was… it was going to be wonderful.
