Zigzag Zander walked down a rainbow-colored road. The sidewalks were wet with puddles. Splish, splash! The air smelled sweet, like cookies and cake. "What a fun town!" said Zander.
Zander found his friend Nessie Sparkles by a funny bench. The bench was shaped like a big cookie! "Nessie, why are you sitting here?" asked Zander. "I am waiting," said Nessie. "But for what?"
A sign by the cookie bench said BUS STOP. "What is a bus?" asked Zander. "I do not know!" said Nessie. "Let us wait and see!" They sat together on the cookie bench. It smelled like chocolate chips!
Rumble, rumble, rumble! Something big was coming! A bright-yellow bus rolled up on four big round wheels. It had big round headlights that blinked like eyes. Blink, blink! "Hello, friends!" the headlights seemed to say.
The bus door folded open. A friendly driver waved. "Hop on!" she said. "But wait your turn. One at a time, nice and slow!" Zander let Nessie go first. Then Zander stepped up. One, two, three steps!
Inside the bus were rows of blue seats. A long yellow cord hung by the windows. "Hold on tight!" said the friendly driver. Nessie grabbed a shiny silver pole. Zander held the seat. The bus began to move!
The friendly driver turned a big round steering wheel. Left! The bus went left. Right! The bus went right. The steering wheel told the wheels where to go. "The driver drives the bus!" said Zander. "And the wheels roll, roll, roll!"
Click, click, click! A little orange light blinked on and off. "Those are blinkers!" said the friendly driver. "They tell everyone which way we will turn." The bus slowed down. Squeeeak! "Those are brakes! They help us stop safely."
They rode past a ticklish crosswalk. Hee hee hee! It giggled when people stepped on it! They rode past bakeries that smelled like warm bread. "I love the bus!" said Nessie. "You can see so many things!"
Nessie was so excited, she wiggled her tail. Boop! Her tail bumped the long yellow cord. DING! The bus began to slow down. "Oops!" said Nessie. "I pulled it too soon!" "That cord tells me you want to stop," said the friendly driver. "This is your stop now!"
Zander and Nessie stepped off the bus. And there it was — a beautiful hidden pond! The water was blue and sparkly. Tiny fish jumped. Plop, plop! "Nessie, your little mistake led us here!" said Zander. "Sometimes the best things are surprises!"
Nessie dipped her flippers in the cool, sparkly water. Zander sat on a soft mossy rock. "Tomorrow," said Nessie, "let us ride the bus again." "Yes!" said Zander. "Where do you think it will take us next?" The bus was out there, rolling on its big round wheels, ready for a brand new road.
