Diego loved soccer more than anything in the whole world. He loved to kick, run, and score goals. On sunny days, he would grab his shiny blue soccer ball and race to the park as fast as his legs could go.
Today was a perfect day for soccer! The sun was warm and the sky was big and blue. Diego ran through the park gate and headed straight for the grassy soccer field. He could hear kids laughing and shouting.
But when Diego got to the field, he saw something that made him stop. A group of kids were already playing a game! They ran back and forth, kicking and passing. The game was right in the middle, and everyone looked busy.
Diego wanted to play right now! He squeezed his shiny blue soccer ball tight and took a big step forward. He almost ran right onto the field. But then he stopped himself. "Wait," he whispered. "They are in the middle of a game."
Diego took a deep breath. He walked to one of the colorful benches along the sideline and sat down. It was hard to wait. His feet tapped and his knees bounced. But he knew that jumping into someone else's game without asking would not be kind.
While he waited, Diego watched the game. A girl with a long ponytail made a great pass! "Wow, nice kick!" Diego called out from the bench. The girl with the ponytail looked over and smiled. "Thanks!" she said.
Diego kept cheering. "Great goal!" he shouted when a boy scored. "Good save!" he yelled when someone blocked the ball. The kids on the field started to wave at him. Cheering for others felt really good.
Soon the kids stopped for a water break. Diego saw his chance. He walked over slowly. His heart beat fast, but he remembered to use his polite words. "Excuse me," Diego said. "May I please play with you?"
The girl with the long ponytail grinned. "You're the one who was cheering for us!" she said. "That was so nice. Of course you can play!" The other kids nodded and smiled. Diego felt warm and happy inside.
Diego ran onto the field with his new friends. He passed the ball. He dribbled fast. He even scored a goal! "Yes!" Diego cheered, jumping up and down. The girl with the ponytail gave him a high five.
After the game, the kids all sat together under the big oak tree. "You were really patient," said the girl with the ponytail. "And you said please. That made us want to play with you." Diego smiled. "Being polite is like a magic key," he said. "It opens doors that pushing never could."
As the sun turned orange and pink, Diego waved goodbye to his new friends. "Same time tomorrow?" he asked. "Yes!" they all called back. Diego walked home with his shiny blue soccer ball under his arm, thinking about how one little word—please—had turned a lonely afternoon into the best day ever. He could not wait for tomorrow.
