Ava loves to draw. She draws big cats and little dogs. She draws red birds and green frogs. Her sunny yellow walls are covered with her pictures. Drawing is her favorite thing to do!
Today Ava is drawing a tall, tall giraffe. She picks up an orange marker. She makes spots — dot, dot, dot! But wait. Her tummy feels wiggly. Her tummy feels rumbly. What does that mean?
It means her body is talking to her! A wiggly, rumbly tummy means it is time to try the potty. But Ava does not want to stop drawing. "Not now!" says Ava. "I am busy!"
Her tummy wiggles again. Rumbly, rumbly, rumble! Ava knows what to do. She puts down her orange marker. She can come back to her giraffe! The giraffe will wait for her.
Ava walks to the bathroom. There is her potty! It is a friendly little potty covered with stickers she put there herself — shiny stars and pink hearts. "Hi, potty!" says Ava.
Ava pulls her pants down all by herself. Down, down, down. She sits on the potty. She waits. She is patient. Sometimes it takes a little while, and that is okay! Then — she did it! Hooray!
Now Ava pulls her pants up all by herself. Up, up, up! She washes her hands with warm, bubbly soap. It smells like sweet strawberries. Scrub, scrub, scrub! All clean!
Now Ava gets to draw a star on her special potty chart! She picks up a yellow marker. She draws a big, bright star. "That star is for ME," says Ava. "Because I tried!"
The next day, Ava is drawing a purple butterfly. Her tummy feels wiggly and rumbly again! This time Ava does not say "Not now." She puts down her marker and walks to the potty. She tries — and she does it again! She draws an even BIGGER star on her chart. This one is orange and blue!
Every time Ava practices, she draws a new star. Pink stars! Green stars! Big, sparkly rainbow stars! Her chart is getting so full and so beautiful. Then one day — the stars begin to wiggle! They dance right off the page! "The stars are dancing!" giggles Ava.
Some days are still tricky. Sometimes Ava does not make it in time. That is okay. She does not feel sad. Her body is still learning, and so is she. She just tries again next time. Trying is what matters most!
Ava looks at her potty chart. So many stars! And there is still so much room for more. She picks up her brightest marker and smiles. There are so many more stars left to draw — and every single one will be hers, because she is a big, brave girl who keeps on trying.
