Queen Neena loved to learn! Every morning, she ran out of her cozy castle to find something new. She peeked under rocks. She counted clouds. She smelled every flower in her big sunflower garden. There was so much to see and do!
Her best friend was a silly white chicken named Cluckster. Cluckster loved to sing! He sang in the morning. He sang in the afternoon. He sang happy little songs ALL day long. "La la la!" sang Cluckster, flapping his wings.
One sunny day, Queen Neena was very busy. She found a sparkly blue beetle! She watched a caterpillar wiggle! She was so busy looking and learning that she walked right past her kind neighbors without stopping. She did not wave. She did not smile. She did not say hello.
Cluckster sang a happy song near a friendly neighbor. "La la la!" But the neighbor was far away and could not hear him. Cluckster's song floated up, up, up into the sky. Nobody clapped. Nobody smiled. It felt... empty.
That night, Queen Neena sat in her castle garden. The sunflowers swayed and hummed softly. But something felt funny inside her chest. It felt small. It felt quiet. It felt... lonely. "Why do I feel so sad?" she whispered.
Cluckster waddled over and sat beside her. He tried to sing, but his song came out very quiet. "My songs do not sound good today," he said. "I sang and sang, but nobody heard me." Queen Neena nodded. "I learned so many things today. But I forgot to share them with anyone."
Then one of the tall sunflowers leaned down close — so close it tickled Queen Neena's nose! It hummed a warm, buzzy tune. "Oh!" laughed Queen Neena. "The sunflower is singing TO me! Not just near me — TO me!" And suddenly, her heart felt a tiny bit warmer.
"That is it!" clucked Cluckster, jumping up. "When I sing TO someone — when I look at them and sing just for them — my song sounds better! Love is like a song. You have to give it TO someone!" Queen Neena's eyes got big and bright. "Yes! Love needs to go somewhere!"
The very next morning, Queen Neena walked down the winding path to the village. But this time, she stopped. She looked her kind neighbor right in the eyes. She smiled. "I am so glad you are here," she said. "You make our kingdom wonderful." The neighbor's face lit up like sunshine!
Then Cluckster sang his happy song — but this time, he walked right up to another neighbor. He looked at her and sang, "La la la, you are great! La la la, you are kind!" The neighbor laughed and clapped. Cluckster's heart felt so full it could pop!
All day long, Queen Neena explored AND loved. She found a wiggly worm — and showed it to a friend! She learned about a puffy cloud — and told her neighbor all about it! She gave hugs. She said kind words. She even said, "I love you," right out loud. And every single time, her heart grew warmer and bigger.
That evening, Queen Neena and Cluckster sat together in the sunflower garden. The sunflowers hummed. The stars blinked. "Cluckster," said Queen Neena softly, "tomorrow there will be more bugs to find and more clouds to count. But there will also be more hugs to give and more love to share." Cluckster snuggled close. "La la la," he sang quietly, just for her. And that was the best song of all.
