Sammy the Spirited Samurai loved adventure more than anything. She had a shiny red helmet and a wooden practice sword at her side. Every morning, she woke up ready to explore. "Today will be the best day yet!" she said with a grin.
Sammy's best friend was a purple warthog named Brutus. Brutus loved jokes more than anything in the whole world. "Hey, Sammy!" he called out. "Why did the bamboo go to school? Because it wanted to grow tall!" He laughed so hard his belly shook.
"Brutus, I heard about a mysterious cave hidden in the bamboo forest!" said Sammy. "It is tucked into a mossy hillside, and no one has been inside for a long, long time." Brutus wiggled his curly tail. "An adventure? Count me in!" he said.
They walked along a winding path through the tall green bamboo. The stalks swayed and whispered in the wind. Soft morning light came through the leaves and made little spots of gold on the ground. "This forest is so pretty," Sammy said. "And a little spooky," Brutus whispered.
Then they saw it. The mouth of the cave was dark and deep. It was tucked into a mossy hillside, just like the stories said. Strange, flickering shadows danced inside. A cool breeze blew out from the darkness, and it made a low, echoing sound. "Whoa," said Brutus. He took a step back.
Sammy walked closer. She lifted her wooden practice sword. She was a brave samurai. She was not supposed to be scared. But then she stopped. Her feet would not move. Her hands felt shaky. Her heart beat fast, like a little drum inside her chest. Sammy froze.
"Sammy? Are you okay?" Brutus asked softly. Sammy did not turn around. She stared at the dark cave. "I... I think I am scared," she whispered. It was the first time she had ever said those words out loud. Her cheeks felt hot. She thought a brave samurai should never be afraid.
Brutus walked up beside her. He sat down right there on the mossy ground. "You want to know something?" he said quietly. "I am scared too. My legs feel all wobbly, like jelly." Sammy looked at him with surprise. "You? But you were just laughing!" she said. "I tell jokes when I feel scared," Brutus said. "It helps a little bit."
Sammy sat down next to Brutus. "I did not want to tell you I was afraid," she said. "I thought you would think I was not a real samurai." Brutus shook his head. "Sammy, everyone gets scared sometimes. Even the bravest people in the whole world feel fear. That is just part of being alive."
They sat together and talked about all the things that scared them. Sammy was afraid of the dark. She was afraid of not knowing what was inside the cave. "Sometimes I am afraid of things that have not even happened yet," she said. "Me too!" said Brutus. "Talking about it makes the scared feeling a little smaller, doesn't it?" Sammy nodded. It really did.
Sammy stood up and brushed off her armor. She looked at the dark cave one more time. "We do not have to go in today," she said. "We can come back another time, when we feel a little more ready." Brutus smiled. "That sounds like the smartest, bravest plan I have ever heard," he said. And he meant it.
They walked back through the whispering bamboo together, side by side. The morning light was warm on their faces. Sammy felt lighter than she had all day. The cave was still there, and so was the fear. But now she knew something new — she did not have to carry it alone. And one day, maybe soon, she and Brutus would walk into that cave together. But not today. And that was perfectly, wonderfully okay.
