It was a warm, sunny day in the meadow. The wildflowers swayed. The tall grass danced. And a tiny black ant named Antonio crawled out of his anthill. "What a beautiful day!" said Antonio. "Time to find some food!"
Antonio loved food more than anything. He loved round red berries. He loved tiny brown seeds. He loved sweet crumbs. Every day, he carried something yummy back to his anthill. One trip. Then another trip. Then another!
"Antonio! Come play!" called a voice. It was Grant, a friendly green grasshopper. Grant loved to jump. He jumped over dandelions. He jumped over rocks. He jumped and jumped and jumped! "Jump with me!" said Grant.
"I can't play yet," said Antonio. "I need to carry this berry home. Winter is coming! If I bring one thing home each day, I will have lots of food when it gets cold." He hugged a big round red berry and pulled it along.
"Winter?" Grant laughed. "That is so far away! Look at the sun! Feel the warm breeze!" Grant jumped high, high, high into the air. "Wheeee!" he called. "You worry too much, Antonio!"
Day after day, Antonio worked. He carried one berry. Then one seed. Then one crumb. Just a little bit each day. "A little bit each day adds up!" Antonio sang as he walked. His anthill was getting full of yummy food.
Day after day, Grant played. He jumped over the berry bushes. He jumped over the big mossy rock. He jumped and jumped and never stopped. "This is the best day ever!" Grant said every single day.
Then one morning, something changed. The sky turned gray. The wind blew cold. The wildflowers drooped. The leaves fell from the bushes. Brrrr! Winter was here. The warm, sunny meadow was not warm anymore.
Grant shivered. His tummy rumbled. He had no berries. He had no seeds. He had no crumbs. "Oh no," said Grant in a tiny voice. "I played all summer. I forgot to save any food." Grant felt cold and hungry and a little bit scared.
Knock, knock, knock! Grant tapped on Antonio's anthill. "Antonio? I am hungry. I have no food." Antonio opened his door and smiled. "Come in, friend! I have plenty. We can share!" Grant could not believe it. "Really?" "Really!" said Antonio.
They ate round red berries and tiny brown seeds together. "Next summer," said Antonio, "we can work together! Just one small trip each day. That is all it takes." Grant nodded. "And then we can jump the rest of the day?" "Then we jump!" said Antonio.
Grant smiled a big, happy smile. He already felt warmer inside. Next summer, he would carry one berry, then jump. One seed, then jump. Work a little, play a lot — with his best friend right beside him. And that sounded like the best day ever.
