The sun smiled down on a meadow full of flowers. The flowers hummed soft, happy songs. The grass felt like velvet under bare feet. What a perfect day to play!
"Blossom! Come look!" called Flicker Sparkleaf. Her friend Blossom Sprout bounced over. Her long, curly vines wiggled behind her. "Ooh! What is it?" said Blossom.
A bumpy little field sat in the middle of the meadow. Daisy chains hung between sticks to make tiny goal posts. Woodland creatures were hopping and buzzing around. "It is a kickball game!" said Flicker. "Let's play!"
The big round red ball sat in the grass. Flicker ran up and kicked it hard. WHOMP! The ball flew through the air! "Your turn, Blossom!" said Flicker Sparkleaf. "You can do it!"
Blossom Sprout ran toward the big round red ball. But—oh no! Her long, curly vines tangled under her feet. TRIP! TUMBLE! PLOP! She fell right on her belly. The ball did not move one bit.
Blossom tried again. She ran. She swung her foot. WHOOSH! She missed the ball. Her vines tripped her again. PLOP! "I am no good," said Blossom Sprout. Her big bright eyes filled with tears. "I keep letting the team down."
Flicker Sparkleaf sat down next to her friend. "Hey," she said softly. "Being a good teammate is not just about kicking. You can cheer for your friends. You can pass the ball. And you can try again. That is what matters most."
Blossom Sprout sniffled. Then she stood up tall. "Okay," she said. "I will try again. But first—GO TEAM!" She clapped her stubby leaf arms and cheered so loud that the wildflowers hummed even louder!
A little bunny on her team kicked the big round red ball. It rolled toward Blossom. "Pass it! Pass it!" called Flicker. Blossom bumped it with her vine. The ball rolled right to Flicker. What a great pass!
Now it was Blossom's last turn to kick. She took a deep breath. She tucked her long, curly vines up tight. She ran toward the big round red ball. She swung her foot and—WHUMP! A big, wobbly boot! The ball bumped and bounced across the field!
"HOORAY!" everyone cheered. Flicker Sparkleaf scooped Blossom into a big hug. The woodland creatures clapped and squeaked. "You did it!" said Flicker. "You tried your best, you helped your team, and you never gave up. That is what a great teammate does!"
The sun dipped low. The wildflowers hummed a sleepy song. Blossom Sprout looked at the bumpy little field. "Same time tomorrow?" she asked. Flicker grinned. "Same time tomorrow." And Blossom smiled, because tomorrow she would try again—and that felt wonderful.
