Leo the lion lived on a warm, golden savanna. He had a big fluffy mane and the loudest yawn in all the land. His favorite thing to do was sleep under his big shady tree. "Ahhhh," Leo yawned. "Nap time!"
Not far away, in a cozy little hole tucked between the tree's bumpy roots, lived Mikey the mouse. Mikey was small and quick. He loved cheese more than anything! "I smell something yummy!" said Mikey. "Time to explore!"
Mikey scurried through the tall swaying grass. Swish, swish, swish! He climbed over pebbles. He hopped over sticks. He did not see the big sleeping lion in front of him. Tip, tap, tip, tap — right up Leo's nose!
"ACHOO!" Leo sneezed. His big eyes popped open. THUMP! His heavy paw landed right on top of little Mikey. "What is THIS?" Leo rumbled. His voice was deep and rumbly like thunder.
Mikey was very scared. His heart went thump, thump, thump! But Mikey remembered — when you are scared, you can use your words to ask for help. "Please let me go!" Mikey squeaked in his tiny voice. "I am just a little mouse. Please be gentle!"
Leo looked down at the tiny mouse. He could feel Mikey's little heart beating fast. Leo was big and strong, but he chose to be kind. He lifted his heavy paw gently. "Go on, little mouse," Leo said softly. "I will not hurt you."
"Oh, thank you!" squeaked Mikey. "You are so kind! Someday I will help YOU!" Leo chuckled. "You? Help me? You are so tiny!" But he smiled a warm smile. "That is very sweet, little mouse." Mikey waved and scurried home to his cozy hole.
Days went by on the warm savanna. Leo napped. Mikey explored. Then one day, Leo wandered far from his big shady tree. He did not see the hunter's rope net hidden in the tall grass. WHOOSH! The net scooped him up! Leo was trapped!
Leo was scared. He pulled and pushed, but the ropes were strong. Then Leo remembered — when you are scared, use your words to ask for help! "ROAAAAR! HELP ME!" Leo roared as loud as he could. His big voice echoed across the golden savanna.
Far away, Mikey heard the roar. His big round ears perked up. "That is Leo! He needs help!" Mikey ran as fast as his little legs could go. Swish, swish, swish through the tall grass. Hop, hop, hop over the pebbles. He ran and ran and ran!
Mikey found Leo all tangled up. "I am here!" squeaked Mikey. "Hold still!" Mikey's teeth were small but very sharp. Nibble, nibble, nibble! He chewed through one rope. Snap! Then another. Snap! Then another. Snap! The net fell away, and Leo was free!
"You saved me!" Leo said, his voice soft with wonder. "I did!" said Mikey. "Even little friends can help in big ways." Leo lay down gently and Mikey climbed up onto his warm, fluffy mane. Together they walked home through the golden grass, side by side — a big friend and a little friend, ready for whatever came next.
