Zippy Zapata loved puzzles more than anything in the world. He loved riddles. He loved mysteries. And he loved finding answers to big questions. Today, he sat on a hilltop meadow full of wildflowers, looking out at the sparkling blue lake far below.
"What a perfect day for an adventure!" said Zippy. His best friend, Ember Flare, stretched her wings and yawned. Ember was a small, whimsical dragon who loved adventure just as much as Zippy loved puzzles. Together, they made a great team.
They ran through the meadow. They chased butterflies. They rolled down the soft green hill and laughed and laughed. The warm sun felt good on their faces. The puffy white clouds drifted so low, they looked close enough to touch.
Then something changed. The puffy white clouds grew dark and gray. The sky turned dim. Drop, drop, drop. Rain began to fall! "Oh no!" said Ember. "Our adventure is getting wet!" Big, cool raindrops splashed on the wildflowers all around them.
Zippy pulled his pointy hat down tight. He looked up at the gray clouds. "Wait, Ember," he said. "This is not a problem. This is a puzzle! Where does all this rain come from?" Ember tilted her head. "I don't know," she said. "Let's find out!"
The rain stopped as quickly as it started. The sun came back out, warm and bright. Zippy looked down at the sparkling blue lake in the valley. "Let's start there," he said. "When I am curious about something, I slow down and observe carefully." So they walked down the hill to the lake.
At the lake, the sun felt very warm. Zippy knelt by the water and watched. Tiny wisps of mist floated up from the surface. "Look, Ember!" he said. "The sun is warming the water. When the sun heats water, it turns into vapor — like tiny, invisible drops that rise up into the air!"
Ember blew a tiny puff of warm air over the water. More mist floated up! "So the water goes up into the sky?" she asked. "Yes!" said Zippy. "The vapor rises higher and higher. When it gets up high, the air is very cold. The cold air turns the vapor back into tiny water drops. And those tiny drops stick together to make clouds!"
They walked back up the hill and lay in the soft green grass. They watched the puffy white clouds drift by. "So clouds are made of water?" asked Ember. "They are!" said Zippy. "Millions and millions of tiny water drops, all floating together. When the drops get big and heavy enough, they fall back down as rain!"
Ember's eyes went wide. "So the rain that fell on us came from the lake?" Zippy grinned. "Maybe! And after the rain falls, it flows back into lakes and rivers. Then the sun warms it again, and it rises back up. It goes around and around. Rain is nature's way of recycling water!"
"That is amazing," said Ember. "We solved the puzzle just by watching and asking questions!" Zippy nodded. "That is the secret," he said. "When you are curious, slow down. Look closely. Ask questions. The world is full of answers if you pay attention."
A cool breeze blew across the meadow. New clouds were already drifting in over the valley. Ember spread her tiny wings and smiled. "I wonder what other puzzles are out there," she said softly. Zippy looked out at the wide, beautiful world and whispered, "I bet there are more than we can count."
