Zippy Zapata lived in a cozy village by a sparkling blue lake. He had a tall pointy hat and a little magic wand. Every morning, the air smelled like warm bread. Yum!
Zippy's best friend lived in the lake. Her name was Nessie Sparkles. She was big and shimmery and loved to explore. "Good morning, Zippy!" she called. Splish, splash!
"Nessie! Let's go to the bakery!" said Zippy. "I want a yummy treat!" Nessie wiggled with joy. "Oh, yes! I love the bakery!" Off they went, down the cobblestone path.
They got to the bakery. The warm bread smell floated out the door. Mmm! But wait — there was a long, long line! So many friends were waiting for treats too.
"Oh no!" said Zippy. "The line is so long! I don't want to wait!" He started to walk to the front. "I'll just go first," he said. His feet went step, step, step.
"Wait, Zippy!" said Nessie softly. "Everyone here is waiting for a treat, just like us. How would you feel if someone pushed in front of you?" Zippy stopped. He thought about it.
"I would feel sad," said Zippy quietly. "That's right," said Nessie. "When we wait our turn, we show respect. It means we care about everyone's feelings. And we can have fun while we wait!"
So Zippy went back to the end of the line. "Hello!" he said to a fluffy cat. "I like your whiskers!" The fluffy cat purred. "Thank you! I like your hat!" Waiting was not so bad!
"Hello!" Zippy said to a tiny ladybug. "What a pretty red coat!" The ladybug giggled. "Thank you! You are so kind!" Zippy smiled big. Being polite felt warm and good inside.
Step by step, the line got shorter. Zippy waited and waited. He said "please" and "excuse me" and "after you." Each kind word made someone smile. Can you say "please" too?
At last, it was Zippy's turn! "May I please have a treat?" he asked. The baker grinned. "You waited so nicely! Here is a treat for you — and a special sparkly cookie for being so polite!" Zippy's eyes went wide. "Thank you!"
Zippy and Nessie sat on the wobbly wooden dock. They nibbled their treats and watched the rainbow ripples dance on the water. "Nessie," said Zippy, "tomorrow I want to say even more kind words." Nessie smiled. "I can't wait to hear them all."
