Sofia was a shy little girl who loved rainbows more than anything in the whole wide world. She loved red and orange and yellow. She loved green and blue and purple too. Her favorite thing to do was draw big, bright rainbows with her crayons.
But Sofia's room was a mess. A very big mess! Crayons were here. Stuffed animals were there. Picture books and dress-up clothes were everywhere. It was a cheerful mess, but it was still a mess.
One morning, Sofia wanted to find her favorite drawing. It was a rainbow she had made with every color she had. "Where is my rainbow?" she asked. She looked on her bed. She looked on her desk. She looked and looked, but she could not find it anywhere.
Sofia sat down on the floor and felt her eyes sting with tears. The mess was so big. It was too big. "I will never find it," she said in a tiny voice. She felt sad and stuck, like she did not know where to start.
Then her mom came to the door. She sat down next to Sofia and gave her a hug. "A big mess can feel scary," her mom said. "But here is a trick. You do not have to clean it all at once. Just pick one small spot. Can you find all the red things first?"
Sofia wiped her eyes. She could do that. She could find the red things! She picked up a red crayon and put it in her crayon box. She found a red dress-up scarf and hung it on its hook. She stacked a red picture book on the shelf. "I did it!" she said, and she smiled a little smile.
Next, Sofia looked for all the orange things. She found an orange stuffed fox and set it on her bed. She found an orange crayon and two orange hair bows. She put each one in its place. Then she found the yellow things — a yellow sun pillow, a yellow crayon, and a yellow cup. One small group at a time!
Sofia kept going. She picked up the green things — a green jump rope and a green book about frogs. She picked up the blue things — a blue blanket, a blue teddy bear, and a blue bouncy ball. With each color she finished, her room looked a little bit better. And she felt a little bit proud.
At last, it was time for the violet things. Sofia picked up a purple hair ribbon. She put away a purple crayon. Then she lifted a fluffy purple pillow — and there it was! Her rainbow drawing was right underneath! "I found it! I found my rainbow!" Sofia cheered.
Sofia looked around. Her room was clean! The crayons were in the box. The books were on the shelf. The stuffed animals sat in a neat row on her bed. The floor was clear, and the warm sunlight came through the big window and caught the rainbow prism just right. Tiny rainbows danced all across her clean floor!
"It is like my room is full of rainbows," Sofia whispered. She held her drawing and thought about something. When she put things away right after she used them, her room could stay this nice. And she could always find the things she loved. She did not have to let the mess get big and scary again.
Sofia tore off a small piece of tape and pressed her rainbow drawing onto the wall, right where the sunlight could touch it. She stepped back and looked at it for a long, happy moment. "Tomorrow," she whispered, "I will try to put things back right when I am done. One color at a time."
