King Doodle Bum lived in a cozy castle made of candy-colored stones. A sparkling chocolate river flowed right past his door, and gummy flowers grew tall in his garden. Inside, the castle halls were warm and bright, with shelves stacked full of jars of chocolate treats. King Doodle Bum loved chocolate more than anything in the whole wide world.
King Doodle Bum had a best friend named Zibloo. Zibloo was a funny little alien with big sparkly eyes who loved stars. Every night, they would sit by the tall castle window and look up at the glittering sky. The stars hummed soft little songs, and Zibloo would wiggle with joy. "Listen!" Zibloo would say. "That star is singing just for us!"
Today was a very special day. The grand Star Festival was tonight! King Doodle Bum and Zibloo had been waiting all year long. "I can not wait!" said King Doodle Bum, bouncing up and down. "There will be dancing and singing and falling stars!" He grabbed his favorite glass jar of chocolate treats from the shelf. "Let's have a snack to celebrate!"
But then — CRASH! The special glass jar slipped right out of King Doodle Bum's hands. It hit the floor and shattered into pieces. Chocolate treats rolled everywhere. King Doodle Bum stared at the broken glass and the little golden star lid on the floor. That jar was his favorite. His dad had given it to him. "Oh no," he whispered. His lip began to wobble.
Before King Doodle Bum could even clean up, a royal messenger came running in. "The Star Festival is canceled!" the messenger cried. "A big storm is coming tonight. No dancing. No singing. No falling stars." King Doodle Bum's eyes went wide. No Star Festival? The one thing he had waited for all year — gone?
All of the bad things piled up at once, like a huge wave crashing over him. King Doodle Bum felt sad. He felt angry. He felt like stomping and crying and hiding all at the same time. His face turned red and hot. He stomped his feet — STOMP, STOMP, STOMP — and tears ran down his cheeks. "It is NOT fair!" he yelled. The feelings were so big they made his whole body shake.
Zibloo watched with worried eyes. The little alien's antennae drooped down low. Zibloo did not know how to help. "King Doodle Bum, you are shaking," Zibloo said softly. "I do not know what to do. But I know someone who might." Zibloo took King Doodle Bum's hand. "Let's go find your mom."
They found the Queen in the cozy reading room. She saw King Doodle Bum's red, teary face and opened her arms wide. He ran right to her. "I broke my jar and the festival is canceled and everything is RUINED!" he cried. The Queen held him close. "Oh, my love," she said gently. "You are feeling so many things at once. Can you tell me what they are?"
King Doodle Bum sniffled. "I feel... sad. And mad. And scared that the sad won't go away." The Queen nodded slowly. "Those are big feelings. And it is okay to feel all of them at once." She smiled. "Let's try something. Pretend you are blowing on hot chocolate — nice and slow." King Doodle Bum took a deep breath in... and blew out slow and soft. In... and out. In... and out.
After a few slow breaths, the huge wave of feelings did not go away. But it got a little smaller. And a little softer. Like a loud song turning quiet. "It still hurts," King Doodle Bum said. "I know," said the Queen. "Big feelings take time. You do not have to make them go away. Just let them be, and they will get gentler." Zibloo patted King Doodle Bum's arm. "I will stay right here with you," Zibloo said.
By bedtime, King Doodle Bum still felt a little sad. But it was a quiet kind of sad now, not the stomping kind. The Queen tucked him in and kissed his forehead. "You were very brave today," she said. "Feeling big feelings is hard work." King Doodle Bum nodded. "Maybe we can fix the jar tomorrow?" he asked. The Queen smiled. "We can try."
Zibloo climbed up next to King Doodle Bum, and they both looked out the tall window. The storm clouds were still there, but just at the edge — a tiny crack had opened up. And through it, one bright star peeked through, humming its soft little song. Zibloo's antennae perked up. "Look," Zibloo whispered. "It waited for us." King Doodle Bum smiled a small, real smile. Tomorrow was a brand-new day.
