Zigzag Zander was a quirky zombie who loved puzzles more than anything in the whole wide world. He lived in a cozy, cobwebbed cottage at the edge of a misty purple lake, where morning fog rolled gently over the water like a soft blanket. His shelves were stuffed with colorful puzzles of every shape and size, and a big cheerful clock on the wall chimed each morning to wake him up. But there was one puzzle Zander could never seem to solve—his morning routine.
Every single morning, the big cheerful clock on the wall chimed its happy tune. BONG! BONG! BONG! But Zander just groaned and pulled the covers over his head. "Five more minutes," he mumbled through his stitched-up lips. Five minutes turned into ten. Ten turned into twenty. And before he knew it, Zander was late again! He leaped out of bed in a panic, tripping over a pile of jigsaw pieces on the floor.
Zander scrambled around his cottage like a dizzy bat. He yanked his shoes on before his pants and hopped around the room in a confused circle. He grabbed his backpack but forgot to put anything inside it. He ran past the bathroom without brushing his teeth and didn't even glance at the kitchen. "No time for breakfast!" he shouted, stumbling out the front door with his shirt on backward and his hair poking out in every direction.
Outside, the misty purple lake shimmered in the early sunlight. Suddenly, a long, graceful neck rose out of the water, covered in sparkling blue-green scales that glittered like tiny jewels. It was Nessie Sparkles, Zander's best friend! She was a curious Loch Ness Monster who loved exploring every corner of the lake. She poked her head through the cottage window and blinked her big golden eyes. "Zander, why are your shoes on your hands?" she asked, tilting her head.
Zander looked down. Sure enough, he had jammed his big clunky red sneakers onto his hands instead of his feet. He sighed a long, rumbly sigh. "Nessie, my mornings are always a jumbled mess," he said, slumping onto the front step. "I forget things. I skip things. I do everything in the wrong order. It's like trying to put together a puzzle with my eyes closed!" Nessie Sparkles swished her shimmering tail and smiled her wide, friendly smile. "Then let's treat it like a puzzle!" she said brightly.
"A puzzle?" Zander perked up. His mismatched button eyes sparkled. If there was one thing he knew how to do, it was solve a puzzle! Nessie dipped her long neck into the cottage and grabbed a big piece of paper and some crayons in her mouth. "Every puzzle has pieces that go in a certain order," she explained. "Your morning is the same way! Let's figure out each step and put them in the right place." Zander grinned his crooked grin. "I like this idea," he said, picking up a green crayon.
Together, they wrote out every step, one by one, like pieces of a puzzle clicking into place. "Step one—wake up when the clock chimes!" said Nessie. "Step two—make your bed!" added Zander. They kept going: step three, use the bathroom; step four, brush your teeth; step five, get dressed; step six, eat breakfast; step seven, pack your bag; and step eight, head out the door! Zander drew a little picture next to each step. By the end, the checklist looked like the most colorful puzzle he had ever made.
"But what if I still oversleep?" Zander asked, chewing on his crayon nervously. Nessie tapped her chin with the tip of her shimmering tail. "Here's a tip," she said. "Set a gentle alarm the night before—something soft and nice, not loud and scary. That way, waking up feels easy instead of awful." Then she added, "And lay out your clothes before you go to sleep! That way, you don't waste time searching for them in the morning." Zander's eyes went wide. "That's brilliant, Nessie! It's like solving part of the puzzle early!"
That very night, Zander set a gentle alarm on the big cheerful clock. He picked out his favorite outfit—a patchy green vest and striped purple pants—and laid them neatly on his chair. He placed his big clunky red sneakers side by side on the floor, right where his feet would land in the morning. He even put his toothbrush on top of his backpack so he wouldn't forget. "There," he said proudly. "Tomorrow's puzzle is already half done." Then he crawled into bed with a peaceful smile on his stitched-up face.
The next morning, the clock chimed its happy tune, and for the first time ever, Zander didn't groan. He sat up, stretched his creaky arms, and smiled. "Step one—done!" he said. He pulled up his blanket and fluffed his pillow. "Step two—done!" He used the bathroom, then brushed his teeth until they were the shiniest zombie teeth in the land. He slipped into his patchy green vest and striped purple pants without a single mix-up. "This is actually fun!" he laughed, checking off each step on his colorful checklist.
Zander sat down at his little kitchen table and ate a big bowl of oatmeal with blueberries on top. He packed his backpack with everything he needed—his favorite puzzle book, a notebook, and a shiny green apple. When he stepped outside, Nessie Sparkles was waiting, her sparkling blue-green scales catching the sunlight. "You did it!" she cheered, splashing the misty purple lake with excitement. "I did!" Zander said proudly. "And you know what? Doing the same steps in the same order helped my brain remember them without even trying. It's like the puzzle solved itself!"
Zander walked along the edge of the misty purple lake with Nessie gliding beside him, her long neck swaying happily. The morning fog was lifting, and the world felt wide open and full of possibility. "You know," Zander said thoughtfully, "mornings used to feel like a puzzle with all the pieces scattered on the floor. But now they feel like a puzzle I actually know how to put together." He looked out at the sparkling water and grinned his crooked grin. "I wonder what new puzzle tomorrow's morning might bring."
