Sofia sat on her warm bed piled with a rainbow-striped quilt. She hugged her favorite stuffed bunny tight. Outside the window, the dusky evening sky was turning dark. The pretty sunset colors were fading away.
"I don't want to go to bed," Sofia whispered. She peeked out the window at the dark sky. "Where did the rainbows go? The sky has no colors now." Sofia felt a little scared. Rainbows always made her feel brave.
Her mama came in and sat on the bed. "What is wrong, sweet girl?" she asked softly. "The dark sky makes me feel shy," said Sofia. "I need rainbows to be brave. But there are no rainbows at night."
Her mama smiled a warm, gentle smile. "I have an idea," she said. "Let's do something special before bed. First, how about a nice warm bath? Warm water can help your body feel calm and sleepy."
Splash, splash, splash! Sofia played in the warm bath. Her mama put in bubbles that shimmered like tiny rainbows. "Look!" said Sofia. "Little rainbows in the bubbles!" The warm water made her feel cozy and soft, like a hug.
After her bath, Sofia put on her favorite pajamas. They were soft and had little rainbow stripes on them. She climbed back into her warm bed piled with the rainbow-striped quilt. "What's next, Mama?" she asked.
"Now we read a story," said her mama. She held up a little book with a rainbow on the cover. Sofia snuggled close. Her mama read about a bunny who hopped over a rainbow bridge. Sofia giggled. "That bunny is brave, just like I want to be!"
Her mama closed the book and tucked Sofia in. "Now let's try something that helps me when I feel shy or scared," she said. "Let's take three slow, deep breaths. Breathe in like you are smelling a flower. Breathe out like you are blowing a bubble."
Sofia breathed in slowly. One... two... three. She breathed out slowly. One... two... three. She did it three times. Each breath made her body feel heavier and warmer, like sinking into a cloud. "I feel calm now," Sofia said with a little smile.
"Now close your eyes," her mama whispered. "Think of your favorite rainbow. Can you see it?" Sofia closed her eyes. At first she saw only dark. But then—a tiny red stripe appeared. Then orange. Then yellow, green, blue, and violet! A big, bright rainbow filled her mind!
"I can see it, Mama!" Sofia whispered. "It is the most beautiful rainbow!" Her mama kissed her forehead. "See? You carry your rainbow inside you. When you feel safe and calm, you can find it anytime. Bedtime is a doorway to a sky full of colors only you can see."
Sofia's breathing became slow and soft. Her little hand rested on her stuffed bunny. She was already dreaming—hopping across a glowing rainbow bridge, just like the brave bunny in her story. And somewhere in her sleepy heart, she wondered what new rainbow adventures tomorrow night's dreams would bring.
