It was Thanksgiving Day! The sky was golden. The leaves were red and orange. They fell softly — swish, swish, swish. Willow Charms clapped her hands. "Time to make a feast!" she said.
Brutus trotted up. His big belly jiggled. "Ooh, ooh! Will there be pie?" he asked. "Will there be corn? Will there be mashed potatoes?" Willow laughed. "Yes, yes, yes! I will use my magic!"
Willow waved her wand over the long wooden table. Sparkles flew — whoooosh! POOF! A big pink cake appeared! "That is not a turkey!" giggled Brutus. Willow scratched her head. "Oops!"
Willow tried again. She wiggled her wand. Sparkles flew — whoooosh! POOF! A big green watermelon appeared! "That is not a turkey either!" Brutus laughed and laughed. His curly tail bounced.
Willow tried one more time. She swished her wand high. Sparkles flew — whoooosh! POOF! A tall stack of pancakes appeared! Brutus fell over giggling. "Pancakes for Thanksgiving?!" Everyone laughed together.
Willow sat down. She felt a little sad. "My magic is all silly today," she said softly. "I wanted everything to be perfect." Brutus waddled close and sat beside her.
Brutus nudged her with his soft purple snout. "Hey, Willow," he said. "Do you know what Thanksgiving is really about?" Willow looked up. "What?" she asked. "It is about saying thank you to the ones you love!"
Willow looked around. She saw all her friends sitting close. Friendly woodland friends were at the long wooden table. Squirrels. Rabbits. A little deer. A wise old owl. They had all come — just to be together. That was the best part!
"Let us each say one thing we are thankful for!" said Willow. She took a deep breath. When something feels hard, it helps to stop and think about the good things. "I am thankful for all of you," she said. Her heart felt warm.
Brutus stood up tall. "I am thankful for jokes! And friends who laugh with me!" The squirrels said, "Acorns!" The rabbits said, "Warm burrows!" The little deer said, "Soft grass!" The wise old owl said, "Hoo-hoo, the stars!" Saying thank you made everyone feel so happy inside.
Then they all ate together! Cake and watermelon and pancakes! It was silly. It was yummy. It was perfect — because they were together. And Willow learned that gratitude feels like the warmest magic of all.
The stars came out, one by one. Willow snuggled close to Brutus under the autumn sky. "Brutus," she whispered, "I wonder what new things I will be thankful for next year." Brutus smiled. "I bet it will be something wonderful." And the leaves kept falling — swish, swish, swish — soft as a lullaby.
