Zigzag Zander loved puzzles more than anything in the whole wide world. Every morning, he walked the twisting cobblestone paths of Puzzle Meadow, looking for a new puzzle to solve. His stitched-up hands were great at fitting pieces together!
"Zander! Wait for me!" called Ember Flare, swooping down from the sky. The little dragon landed with a puff of sparkly smoke. "Where are we going today?" she asked, flapping her shimmery wings.
"To the playground!" said Zander. "I have a brand-new puzzle with one hundred pieces!" They skipped and flew down the path together. Skip, skip, flap! Skip, skip, flap! The sparkling creek sang beside them as they went.
At the playground, Zander spotted someone new. A small bunny sat alone on a bench near the swings. She held a little book tight against her chest and looked down at her feet. Her ears drooped low.
"A new friend!" Zander said. He rushed right over. "Hi! I'm Zigzag Zander! Do you want to do a puzzle with me?" The bunny's eyes went wide. She shook her head and scooted away on the bench.
Zander felt sad. "She does not like me," he whispered to Ember Flare. Ember tilted her head. "Maybe she is not ready yet," Ember said softly. "When someone says no, it is okay. It does not mean never. It just means not right now."
Zander thought about that. "So what should I do?" he asked. Ember smiled. "You could sit nearby. Not too close. Just do your puzzle and let her see you are kind. Sometimes the best way to make a friend is to give them space."
So Zander sat down in the grass, not too close and not too far. He opened his puzzle box and began to sort the pieces. Blue ones here. Green ones there. Click, click, click. He hummed a happy tune as he worked.
After a while, the bunny peeked over her book. She watched Zander fit a red piece into a blue piece. Click! She watched Ember Flare try to fit a piece with her claws. It was upside down! The bunny let out a tiny giggle.
Zander looked up and smiled, but he did not rush over this time. "This puzzle is tricky," he said gently. "I think this piece goes somewhere, but I cannot find the spot." He held up a bright yellow piece shaped like a star.
The bunny set down her little red book. She walked over slowly, one hop at a time. She pointed to a spot near the corner. "It goes there," she said in a soft, small voice. Zander placed the piece down. Click! It fit perfectly! "You are really good at this!" said Zander. The bunny smiled.
The three of them sat together in the warm sunshine, fitting pieces into the puzzle one by one. They did not need to talk a lot. Sometimes Ember giggled. Sometimes the bunny pointed. Sometimes Zander hummed. And that was enough. A new friendship did not need to be loud or fast. It just needed a little patience and a lot of kindness.
