Zigzag Zander lived in a funny little village called Munch Meadow. The village had crooked cottages, a bubbling creek, and twisting garden paths lined with giant vegetables. Zander loved puzzles more than anything. He could solve any riddle, crack any code, and figure out any maze. But today, Zander had a brand-new idea. "I want to throw a big feast for everyone!" he said.
There was just one problem. Zander only knew how to eat candy. Gummy worms, lollipops, and chocolate bars—that was all he ever ate! "A feast of candy!" he cheered. He piled candy high on the big wooden table in the town square. The table sat under the glowing lantern tree, and the candy sparkled in the warm light. But something did not feel right.
"Zander! Zander!" called a shimmery voice. Glimmer Puff floated down from the sky like a tiny shooting star. She was Zander's best friend, and she loved adventures. "A feast? How exciting! What are we making?" she asked. "Candy!" said Zander proudly. Glimmer Puff tilted her head. "Only candy? That is a LOT of sugar. Your body needs more than sugar to feel strong."
"It does?" asked Zander. He scratched his head. Glimmer Puff nodded. "Food is like a puzzle, Zander! Different colorful foods give your body different kinds of energy. Red foods like tomatoes help your heart. Orange foods like carrots help your eyes. Green foods like spinach make your muscles strong." Zander's mismatched eyes grew wide. "Food is a PUZZLE? Now I am VERY interested!"
"Let's go on an adventure!" said Glimmer Puff. She led Zander down a twisting garden path to the biggest vegetable patch in Munch Meadow. Giant red tomatoes grew in one row. Bright orange carrots poked out of the dirt in another. Big green heads of spinach sat round and leafy in the next. "Each color is a piece of the puzzle," said Glimmer Puff. "A good tip is to try to eat a rainbow every day!"
Zander picked a giant red tomato. It was round and smooth. He picked a bright orange carrot. It was long and crunchy. He picked a big bunch of green spinach. The leaves were soft and cool. "Red, orange, green," said Zander. "But what about purple and yellow?" "Great thinking!" said Glimmer Puff. "Purple grapes give you energy that lasts. Yellow corn helps your brain think!"
Zander gathered purple grapes and yellow corn too. His arms were full of colorful food! "This is the best puzzle I have ever solved," he said. "But wait—I do not know how to cook!" Glimmer Puff laughed. "You do not have to do it alone. Another good tip is to ask for help. Cooking together makes everything more fun!"
Glimmer Puff floated through the village and called out to everyone. "Come help us cook! Come share a meal!" A shy, furry monster peeked out from a crooked cottage. A tall, scaly monster stepped out from behind a giant cabbage. A tiny, round monster bounced over from the bubbling creek. They did not know each other very well. But they all wanted to help.
The monsters got to work at the big wooden table under the glowing lantern tree. The shy, furry monster washed the tomatoes. The tall, scaly monster chopped the carrots. The tiny, round monster stirred a big pot of corn soup. Zander tossed the spinach with the purple grapes. "We are building a rainbow on a plate!" he cheered. And as they cooked, they started to talk and laugh.
The feast was ready! The big wooden table was covered with colorful food. There was red tomato salad, orange carrot sticks, green spinach with purple grapes, and warm yellow corn soup. Zander put a small bowl of candy at the end of the table too. "A little candy is okay," said Glimmer Puff with a wink. "The trick is to eat the rainbow FIRST." Everyone sat down together.
The monsters ate and talked and laughed. The shy, furry monster was not so shy anymore. The tall, scaly monster told funny jokes. The tiny, round monster shared seconds with everyone. Zander looked around the table. These monsters had been strangers before. But now, sitting together, sharing food, they felt like friends. "Glimmer Puff," Zander whispered. "This is the best puzzle I have ever figured out."
Glimmer Puff floated close and smiled. "What do you mean?" she asked. Zander looked at the colorful food. He looked at the new friends. "The food gives us energy," he said softly. "But sharing it gives us something even better. It gives us each other." The lanterns glowed. The creek bubbled. And Zander already wondered what rainbow he would cook up next—and who might come to the table.
