Zippy Zapata lived in a tall stone lighthouse on a tiny island in the big blue ocean. He loved puzzles. He loved the sea. And he loved watching the sky change colors every day.
His best friend was a little dragon named Ember Flare. Ember Flare loved adventure! She could fly and swoosh and blow tiny puffs of smoke. Together, they explored the ocean every single day.
One morning, Zippy Zapata dipped his toes in the water. "Oh!" he said. "The ocean feels very, very warm today. Like bath water!" Warm water. That was the first piece of the puzzle.
Ember Flare flew up, up, up into the sky. She looked down. "Zippy! The clouds are moving!" she called. The puffy clouds were starting to spin. Slowly, slowly — around and around. Swirl, swirl, swirl!
Zippy Zapata opened his big book of weather puzzles. "I found it!" he said. "When the ocean gets very warm, it heats the air above it. The warm air goes up, up, up! Then the wind starts to spin." Whoooosh!
Ember Flare flapped her wings. "So the warm water makes warm air. And the warm air goes up. And then it spins?" "Yes!" said Zippy Zapata. "It spins and spins. It gets bigger and bigger. That is how a hurricane starts!"
The wind began to blow harder. Whoooosh! Whoooosh! The waves got bigger. Splash, crash, splash! The sky turned dark and gray. "The hurricane is coming," whispered Zippy Zapata. "Can you feel it?"
"What do we do?" asked Ember Flare. "We stay safe!" said Zippy Zapata. "We go inside our strong lighthouse. It is built with heavy stones. We close the big red door. We stay away from the windows. And we wait."
Inside the lighthouse, they were warm and cozy. The wind howled outside. Hoooowl! The rain tapped on the stones. Tap, tap, tap! But inside, they were safe. Zippy Zapata read his book. Ember Flare curled up in a soft blanket.
"Zippy," said Ember Flare quietly, "will the storm stay forever?" Zippy Zapata smiled. "No," he said gently. "Hurricanes always move on. When the storm passes over land or cooler water, it gets weaker. It will stop. Storms always end."
And then — it happened! The wind got softer. Shhhhhh. The rain slowed down. Drip… drip… drip. The clouds pulled apart like cotton candy. And there, stretching across the whole sky, was a big, beautiful rainbow! "Look!" cheered Ember Flare. "Colors!"
Zippy Zapata and Ember Flare stepped outside. The air smelled fresh and clean, like the whole world had taken a bath. The ocean was calm again. The sun felt warm on their faces. Somewhere out there, another storm might come someday. But now they knew — they could understand it, they could be ready, and the sky would always clear again.
