A story about Tornadoes
for your 2nd Grader
Zippy Zapata stood at the edge of the wide, golden prairie and squinted at the sky. Dark clouds were rolling in from the west, and the tall sunflowers around him swayed back and forth like they were waving hello. Zippy loved puzzles more than anything, and right now, the sky was giving him a big one. "Something strange is happening up there," he whispered, pulling his wizard hat down tight.
A sparkly shimmer zipped through the air beside him, leaving a trail of glittering light. It was Glimmer Puff, his best friend, a joyful little ghost who glowed like a firefly on a summer night. "Zippy! Zippy! Did you see that cloud?" Glimmer Puff squealed, bouncing up and down in the air. "It's spinning like a top! Let's go find out why!" Zippy grinned. An adventure AND a puzzle? That was the best kind of day.
They raced across the prairie toward the small magical weather station that sat between the tall sunflowers and the old red barn. The weather station had spinning dials, blinking lights, and a big glass dome on top that showed the wind patterns in the sky. Zippy pressed his nose against the glass and watched as two arrows inside swirled in opposite directions. "Look!" he said. "One arrow is red and one is blue. That means warm air and cold air are both blowing across the prairie right now!"
Glimmer Puff floated closer to the glass dome and tilted her glowing head. "But why does that matter?" she asked. Zippy pulled a crinkled weather book from his wizard cloak and flipped through the pages. "When warm, wet air near the ground rises up fast and crashes into cold, dry air coming from above, the winds can start to spin," he read aloud. "That spinning air is called a mesocyclone. It's the first step in making a tornado!" Glimmer Puff's eyes went wide. "A TORNADO?"
Just then, a gust of warm wind whooshed past them, and a second later, a blast of cold wind followed. The two winds swirled together above the prairie like invisible hands stirring a giant bowl of soup. High up in the clouds, a long, gray funnel began to stretch down toward the ground. "There it is!" Zippy shouted, pointing up. "The spinning air is getting tighter and faster, just like when you spin in a circle and pull your arms in close. That's what makes the funnel drop down from the cloud!"
Glimmer Puff shivered, even though ghosts don't really get cold. "Is it going to come this way?" she asked nervously. Zippy looked at the weather station's dials again. The red arrow was spinning faster now. "It might," he said seriously. "When a tornado touches the ground, it can be very dangerous. That's why people need to get to a safe place, like a basement or a sturdy room with no windows, and stay low." He paused and looked around the prairie. "We should find shelter too — just in case."
But before they could move, a tiny sound rose above the howling wind. "Eee! Eee! Eee!" It was a soft, frightened cry coming from behind a clump of sunflowers. Zippy and Glimmer Puff rushed over and found a small baby rabbit trembling in the tall grass. Its fur was brown and spotted with white, and its little ears were pressed flat against its head. "Oh no," Glimmer Puff whispered. "It's all alone and so scared!"
Zippy knelt down and gently scooped up the baby rabbit. It fit right in his two hands. "We need to get this little one somewhere safe," he said. The wind was getting louder, and the gray funnel cloud was growing wider in the distance. "The old red barn!" Glimmer Puff cried. "It has a root cellar underneath — I saw the door last time we explored here!" Zippy nodded. "That's perfect. Underground is one of the safest places to be during a tornado. Let's go — fast!"
They sprinted across the prairie, the golden grass whipping against their legs. Glimmer Puff flew ahead, her sparkly glow lighting the way like a lantern in the growing darkness. "This way! This way!" she called, swooping toward the old red barn. The wind roared behind them, and dust swirled up from the ground in little circles. Zippy held the baby rabbit close to his chest and ran as fast as his legs could carry him.
They reached the barn just in time. Glimmer Puff squeezed through the wall — because ghosts can do that — and unlatched the heavy root cellar door from inside. Zippy pulled it open with a grunt and hurried down the wooden steps, still clutching the baby rabbit. The cellar was cool, dim, and quiet. Above them, the storm howled and the barn creaked, but down here, they were safe. "We made it," Zippy breathed, sitting down on an old crate. The baby rabbit wiggled its nose and finally stopped shaking.
"You know," Zippy said softly, stroking the rabbit's ears, "tornadoes are one of nature's most powerful forces. They happen when the atmosphere gets unstable — that means the warm air and cold air are so different that they can't stay still. The warm air shoots up, the cold air pushes down, and the wind starts to spin." Glimmer Puff floated down and hovered near the rabbit. "It's scary," she said, "but now we know what to do. Get low, get underground, and stay away from windows." Zippy smiled. "Exactly. Knowing what to do is the best kind of magic."
After a while, the wind above grew quiet. Zippy climbed the wooden steps and pushed open the heavy cellar door. Warm golden sunlight spilled across his face. The storm had passed, and the prairie glowed like a field of treasure under a sky washed clean and blue. The baby rabbit hopped out of his arms and bounded toward the sunflowers, where a bigger rabbit was already waiting. Glimmer Puff drifted up beside Zippy, her sparkle even brighter than before. "What's the next adventure?" she asked, grinning. Zippy looked out at the wide, beautiful prairie and all the mysteries it still held. "I don't know yet," he said. "But I can't wait to find out."
